Your Save the Date card is your opportunity to give your wedding guests a heads up about your upcoming nuptials so they have ample time to request time off work, make travel and accommodation plans, and possibly get child care to ensure they are with you to celebrate your big day. But you might have several questions about your Save the Date, including what to write on your Save the Date card. The good news is that it’s not that complicated.
When to Send Your Save the Date Cards
Sooner rather than later is preferable. Especially if it’s a destination wedding or you’ve planned an entire weekend of festivities, you should send them 6-8 months before your wedding. You don’t need to have everything planned. Your save the date is meant to give minimal information about the wedding.
What to Cover
There are a few crucial pieces of information that you’ll need to include on your Save the Date.
The Couple’s Names
The choice is yours as to whether to write out the full names of both the bride and groom or use just first names.
The Wedding Date
However, you don’t need to include a time for the ceremony or reception. That will be on the invitation.
The Location
Simply write a city and state for the Save the Date. The location of the wedding venue will be included on the official invitation.
A note about the invitation
This line will let your guests know a formal invitation will arrive in the mail closer to the wedding date. (Ex: Invitation to follow.) Always include this line so your guests know an invitation is coming later.
Wedding Website
If you have a wedding website, you can include it on your Save the Date. The website has information on wedding details, lodging options, details on the wedding party, and the gift registry.
Do not include your registry or venue on your Save the Date. Your invitation suite or your wedding website is the appropriate place for that information.

When it comes to your Save the Date wording, it’s important that you choose wording that sounds like you and sets the tone for your wedding. Your Save the Date card is the first piece of information guests have about your wedding. This means that it should match the feeling you’re going for. There are a few ways you can go about it.
